Teaching Seniors to Stand Strong
Canada’s senior population is expected to grow by an unprecedented 68%, largely attributable to better medical care. However, the aging process does not come without its challenges. Loss of mobility and movement, a decrease in brain health, feelings of isolation and lack of social activities are but some of the obstacles they have to overcome.
PowerEd was designed to assist older adults to stand strong and be confident by presenting tips on personal safety, assertive communication strategies and risk management through a series of activities and exercises. It encourages physical activity to promote health and wellbeing.
PowerEd coaches seniors on how to foster social networks and improve a sense of inclusion in their community. Classes are offered in residences, seniors centers and community centers.
Providing Seniors with Adequate Supports to Help Them Cope with Some of the Biggest Challenges of Aging
Many view the elderly as vulnerable and, as such, prey upon their perceived weakness. There have been many such incidents of aggression and internet scams reported over the past years, and by giving seniors the information and tools they need to become cognizant of potential risks, and react accordingly, their chances of staying safe are greatly improved.
Falls, in particular, are a major concern among seniors. They are the second cause of disability and death and the primary cause of hospital admissions. It has been proven that most falls can be prevented through increasing attention to risks, exercise, resistance training and by working on balance and weight shifting.
