Fit4Defense offers a variety of workshops and camps for women, men, seniors, teens and children in the community. Below are brief descriptions of some of those that have been offered. Check the calendar often for upcoming events in your neighbourhood.
Introductory Workshops
Appropriate for Youth, Women, Seniors, Mother/Daughter, Families or Sport Teams
(2-3 hours)
Fit4Defense builds confidence and a sense of well being as you begin to counteract feelings of being ‘disrespected’ ‘powerless’ or ‘afraid’. The exercises provide direction to identify your strengths and challenges, perceive potential aggressive triggers and cues, to practice assertive communication to neutralize potentially violent situations without harm to yourself or others.
The physical techniques are a set of simple, easy to learn, but effective self defense responses and exercises. Since self defense is considered to be over 70% psychological, it is important to consider strategies for practicing assertiveness; attention, awareness and avoidance of potentially threatening situations.
In this introductory workshop you will learn:
– Warm up exercises for strength and to stretch
– The benefits of self defense training
– The four A’s-Attention, Awareness, Avoidance and Action!
– To take a defensive position to protect your vital points against an attack
– A practical block for self defense
– A practical strike for self-defense
– Fundamentals of a wrist release
– Personal safety and awareness tips in day-to-day situations
No previous experience is necessary.
Workshops for Women 50 Plus – Strategies for Assertiveness and Self Defense
Join other women like you to build confidence and a sense of well being as you learn skills to counteract feelings of being ‘powerless’ or ‘afraid’. Do you know we are one of the fastest growing populations in Canada! The exercises provide direction to identify your personal strengths and challenges, perceive potential aggressive triggers and cues, to practice assertive communication and to neutralize potentially violent situations without harm to self or others.
This workshop teaches a highly refined set of simple, easy to learn, but effective self defense techniques and exercises. Since self defense is considered to be 70% psychological, it is so important to consider strategies for practicing attention, awareness and avoidance of potentially threatening situations.
No previous experience is necessary and the group will provide a safe environment and supportive to share experiences and perspectives. Researchers and doctors have been reporting on the many benefits of physical activity. Activity can improve your health, balance and posture. It can control weight build, reduce feelings of depression, build stronger muscles and bones, help to gain more energy, relax and reduce stress levels and lower blood pressure. All these factors contribute to reduce the risk of many serious health risks.

These classes will introduce assertive communication and self-defense skills and focus on topics such as exploring boundaries, biases and preferences, defining aggressive and assertive behaviours, identifying attention, awareness and avoidance strategies, exploring assertive communication skills and practising simple, practical self-defense techniques.
